Heads up Snowfiends: tickets for the Eurostar ski train, direct from St Pancras to the French Alps, went on sale on Tuesday August 6.
You can buy them online at the Eurostar website – and at the call centre on 08432 186 186.
Trains run from London and Ashford International to Moutiers, Aime-La-Plagne and Bourg St Maurice (though the stop at Aime-La-Plagne is for outward trains only: for the return leg you’ll need to board at Bourg). There are two services a week – one overnight service (out on Friday night, back on Saturday night), and the other a daytime Saturday service. Prices start from £149 return – although last winter £299 return was more normal for the daytime trains.
Check here for timetables. The service starts on December 20, and finishes on April 12: so, no trains over Easter (which falls on April 20 in 2014).
This winter, the daytime Saturday service will take just over 8hrs from London to Bourg St Maurice, and for Londoners (and anyone close to Ashford) it’s unquestionably the most relaxing way to get to the big-name ski resorts of France. As a result, IT SELLS OUT QUICKLY for key dates – especially the week of New Year and February half term. If you want the train for those dates – book it now.
Here’s a sample of the resorts you can access using the service:
From Aime-La-Plagne: La Plagne.
Eurostar has also started selling of its daytime Saturday service to Switzerland, which goes to Lille and connects with a Lyria service to Vallorbe, Aigle, Martigny, Visp and Brig. From these you can get local services to the likes of Verbier, Grimentz and Zermatt. Click here for timetables. Return fares on this service start from £179: and you can buy connecting fares up to the resorts through the Switzerland Travel Centre on 020 7420 4934.
