THE ALPS

Gurgl-Obergurgl-Hochgurgl (15/25 lifts; 35/112km piste; 0-40cm base) has overtaken Hintertux with the most terrain available in Austria. Kaunertal, Kitzski, Kitzsteinhorn, Moelltal Glacier, Pitztal Glacier, Solden and Stubai round out the list of the resorts offering good turns under mostly sunny skies.

Italy has three ski areas open. The glacier at Val Senales; Solda in the South Tyrol; and Cervinia, which is linked to the slopes of Zermatt in Switzerland.

Zermatt continues to offer very good skiing and has the most terrain available in Switzerland (13/51 lifts; 30/322km piste; 0-150cm base).

Zermatt is joined by Saas-Fee and Glacier 3000 – Les Diablerets for daily operations and Adelboden, Diavolezza, Engelberg, Murren and Verbier which are open on weekends.

THE NORDIC COUNTRIES

Thanks to snow farming practices and early season cold temperatures suitable for snowmaking Finland’s Levi and Ruka, and Sweden’s Kabdalis are open for the season offering good but limited skiing.

As is so often the case, schedule a race event and the snow will arrive. That’s exactly what happened at Levi for the first World Cup Slalom race of the season, with Mikaela Shiffrin notching up her 98th career win.

Norway’s Galdhopiggen Summer Skiing area is holding on well in to the Autumn after recent snowfall with all lifts and terrain open and a 1m base up high.

NORTH AMERICA

CANADA

Alberta is now up to five resorts open for the season with Mt Norquay joining Lake Louise, Marmot Basin, Nakiska and Sunshine in offering between 3-5km of pisted terrain.

All five resorts have a combination of natural and artificial snow covering the open slopes.

Last season’s front runner Sommet Saint-Sauveur in Quebec is the first resort to open on the East Coast after a very mild and dry Autumn.

Sommet Saint-Sauveur

USA

The US leads the ski world in the number of resorts open for Winter fun after great early season snowfall and low temperatures allowing artificial snow making at ski areas on the West Coast and across the Rockies from Utah down to Arizona.

The East Coast has joined the party after a dry and warm Autumn, with the snow guns finally firing up at Killington, Sunday River, and Whiteface-Lake Placid.

ARIZONA : Arizona Snowbowl
CALIFORNIA : Mammoth
COLORADO : Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper Mtn, Eldora, Keystone, Loveland, Purgatory, Vail, Winter Park, Wolf Creek
IDAHO: Lookout Pass
MAINE : Sunday River
OREGON : Timberline

NEW MEXICO : Pajarito, Sandia Peak
NEW YORK : Whiteface-Lake Placid

Snow News

We’re still waiting for resorts in France to open for the season. Hopefully it won’t be long, with big systems rolling through the Alps this week with 50-70cm forecast for La Plagne, Les Arcs, Tignes and Val D’Isere.

If you’re looking to get your French Fix at a different destination this season you won’t go far wrong with Les 7 Laux in the Isere Region

World Snow Forecast For the Next 3-4 Days

A storm system is sweeping across the Alps the first half of this week with 10-20cm forecast in Austria (Gurgl, Stubai) and Italy (Solda and Val Senales); and 20-50cm in Switzerland (Saas Fee, Verbier, Zermatt).

The latter half of the week could be very good with big numbers forecast for Thursday and Friday.

After snowfall this past weekend the Finnish resorts (Levi, Ruka) will see temperatures drop well below freezing under clear skies over the next 3-4 days. Sweden (Kabdalis) could see 10-20cm of new snowfall.

The Alberta resorts of Canada (Lake Louise, Sunshine) will see 10-20cm of new snowfall.

The US resorts will see continued low temperatures and sunshine for the first half of the week, with the Pacific Northwest States of Oregon (Timberline) and Washington (Alpental) expecting between 50-80cm of new snowfall.
