Snow Report 24/25 Featured

Snow Report – And we’re back!

The clocks have gone back, the nights are drawing in. We’ve had Halloween and Bonfire Night. The Fall Line Skiing Magazine Gear Guide 2025 is on the shelves and the Northern and London Show Shows have prepped and primed us for another sensational season in the mountains of the Northern Hemisphere.

WHAT HAVE YOU MISSED OVER THE SUMMER?

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

It was a ‘Meatloaf’ Season south of the Equator with 2 of the 3 destinations having great conditions, which ain’t bad! Australia was the one losing out with the majority of resorts having to end their seasons prematurely after surviving on mostly man-made snow for most of their Winter.  NZ had a consistently good season with regular snowfalls from June through to September with some epic days on snow.

S America was the big winnner with a long and deep season and some all-time days on the slopes. It was snowiest start to the season since the 1990s in Chile and Argentina with huge May and June snowfalls which continued right through until the end of September.

Fall Line’s Editor-at-Large Jonny Richards took a trip to Chile’s Tres Vallees just out of capital city Santiago this past September and you can read about his adventures here.

If you’re thinking of heading to Chile and/or Argentina during the next N Hemisphere Summer (Jun-Sep 2025) then this is one of the best resources on the internet for historical data; tips on how to travel around the ski areas; and current conditions on the ground. 👉 Casey E’s thread on the Teton Gravity Research (TGR) forum

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE

The European Glacier Summer Ski season started well after big snowfalls in late March, April and May but was decent at best for much of July and August with sunshine and high temperatures eating into the snowpack.

September saw spectacular snowfall across the Alps with 50cm to 1m of new snow offering up late Summer powder turns in Austria

Fall Line’s Ads Manager, Rich, spent last weekend on the Stubai Glacier with the team from Carv. The conditions were perfect for November: blue skies, cold temps, and solid snow.

Check out the photos from his trip below, and don’t miss the video footage he shared from his adventure, which you can catch here.

Across the pond, Wolf Creek Ski Area in Colorado, USA was the first resort in N America to open for the 2024/25 Winter season.

Cool temperatures and a 53cm storm total allowed them to open for their 85th Winter Season on Tuesday 22 October. Check it out on Facebook.

And the snow continues to fall, and conditions are excellent.

THE NORDIC COUNTRIES

Thanks to snow farming practices and early season cold temperatures suitable for snowmaking Finland’s Levi and Ruka, and Sweden’s Kabdalis are open for the season.

Norway’s Galdhopiggen Summer Skiing area is holding on well in to the Autumn after recent snowfall.

NORTH AMERICA

CANADA

Sunshine and Lake Louise in Alberta are open for the season with limited terrain (5km and 4km respectively) and Nakiska has 3km of slopes open at weekends.

All three resorts have a combination of natural and artifical snow covering the open slopes.

USA

The US leads the ski world in the number of resorts open for Winter fun after great early-season snowfall and low temperatures, allowing artificial snowmaking at ski areas on the West Coast and across the Rockies from Utah down to Arizona.

COLORADO : Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper Mtn, Keystone, Loveland, Winter Park, Wolf Creek
OREGON : Timberline
NEVADA : Mt Rose
UTAH : Brian Head, Solitude

There’s no appreciable precipitation forecast for the Alps the first part of this week, but the freezing level is set to drop to around 2,000m preserving existing conditions and allowing increased snowmaking.

It’s a similar situation in the Nordic countries for the next 3-4 days.

Most of the Canadian and US resorts will see continued low temperatures and light precipitation for the first half of the week, with the Pacific Northwest States of Oregeon and Washington and Western Canada expecting between 30-50cm of new snowfall.

Are you thinking of heading to Utah, USA, this season?
