And I can declare the 2024/25 Welsh Winter Season open!

Welsh as in Wales? Yep. No lifts just hike to terrain and with the snowfall which has blanketed the UK it was game on.

Yesterday’s venue was Hay Bluff on the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park with my partner-in-crime Chris for a Powys Powder Day!

Where To Ski

There are currently 52 resorts open worldwide with Wolf Creek in Colorado, USA still offering the most skiable terrain with all pistes open for the first time (10/11 lifts; 100/100km piste; 65-70cm base).

THE ALPS

Hintertux is back in pole position in Austria for the most terrain on offer (17/21 lifts; 38/62km piste; 0-85cm base) overtaking Gurgl-Obergurgl-Hochgurgl. Kaunertal, Kitzski, Kitzsteinhorn, Moelltal Glacier, Pitztal Glacier, Solden and Stubai round out the list of the resorts offering rapidly improving skiing with snowfall since out last report.

Italy has four ski areas open. The glacier at Val Senales; Solda in the South Tyrol; and Cervinia, which is linked to the slopes of Zermatt in Switzerland, have been joined by 3 Zinnen Dolomites which is currently offering limited piste skiing.

Zermatt continues to offer very good skiing and has the most terrain available in Switzerland (14/51 lifts; 31/322km piste; 5-150cm base).

Zermatt is joined by Saas-Fee and Glacier 3000 – Les Diablerets for daily operations and Adelboden, Diavolezza, Engelberg, Murren and Verbier which are open on weekends.

France joins the party this coming weekend with both Tignes and Val Thorens set to start operations for the 2024/25 Winter season.

THE NORDIC COUNTRIES

Thanks to snow farming practices and early season cold temperatures suitable for snow making Finland’s Levi and Ruka, and Sweden’s Kabdalis are open for the season offering good but limited skiing.

Norway’s Galdhopiggen Summer Skiing area is holding on well in to the Autumn after recent snowfall with all lifts and terrain open and a 1m base up high.

NORTH AMERICA

CANADA

Alberta currently has three resorts open for daily operations (Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise, and Mt Norquay) with Marmot Basin and Nakiska and Sunshine in open on weekends.

All five resorts have a combination of natural and artificial snow covering the open slopes.

Sommet Saint-Sauveur in Quebec is open thanks to extensive artificial snow making.

Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia opens today, a day earlier than planned thanks to the recent snowfall.

USA

The US leads the ski world in the number of resorts open for Winter fun after great early season snowfall and low temperatures allowing artificial snow making at ski areas on the West Coast and across the Rockies from Utah down to Arizona.

Heavenly in California, Brighton in Utah and Mount Baker in Washington State opened this week.

CALIFORNIA : Heavenly, Mammoth
COLORADO : Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper Mtn, Eldora, Keystone, Loveland, Purgatory, Vail, Winter Park, Wolf Creek

World Snow Forecast For the Next 3-4 Days

A storm system is sweeping across the Alps building the base in resorts set to open in the next 7-10 days.

There’s 10-20cm forecast in Austria (Gurgl, Stubai) and Italy (Solda and Val Senales); and 40-60cm in Switzerland (Saas Fee, Verbier, Zermatt).

After last weekend’s snowfall and cold, dry conditions for the first part of the week the resorts in Finland (Levi, Ruka) and Sweden (Kabdalis) could see 5-15cm of new snowfall.

The Alberta resorts of Canada (Lake Louise, Sunshine) will see 10-20cm of new snowfall through the weekend.

Most of the US resorts will see continued low temperatures and sunshine for the first half of the week.

California (Heavenly, Mammoth) is expecting 40-60cm of new snowfall, with the Pacific Northwest States of Oregon (Timberline) and Washington (Mount Baker) expecting between 20-30cm.
