A sense of history
Dr Holms Hotel has been the focal point of the resort for over 100 years and has a spa with swimming-pool, a main restaurant, an American diner, a brasserie and café, and a bowling alley. It receives rave reviews from reporters. Ustedalen Hotel is a comfortable family-run establishment 700m from the resort centre and even closer to the ski area. In the 1890s the then-owners rented rooms to the engineers working on the Bergen Railway, and only later did it become a hotel. Today it has an indoor swimming-pool, colourful bedrooms including family rooms with up to four bunk beds, and a cosy living room with log fire. It also has three log-cabin-style apartments for up to 10 people, each one with its own sitting-room and well equipped kitchen.
Stay in a log cabin
Geilolia Cabins are 30 well equipped ski-in ski-out cabins in the Geilolia ski area and 1km from the village centre. Each cabin has a sauna and sleeps between six and 12 people. Bordola Hoyfjellshotell has 26 log cabins set in the woods, each with four bedrooms and a cosy sitting room. These, and the main building (which also has bedrooms), are well-run and family-friendly – the food and service are excellent and there is a swimming-pool and playroom. There’s also a bar with live music and a floodlit ice-skating rink behind the hotel. Vestlia Resort is a collection of typically Norwegian cabins 50m from Geilolia Ski Centre. The cross-country trails start right outside the door, there’s an excellent spa and fitness centre, and the in-house restaurant is known for its good food.
Thon Hotel Highland is recommended for its clean, comfortable rooms, friendly staff, great food and pool. It was refurbished in recent years and there is a nightclub, spa and a children’s playroom. Lia Fjellstue is in Skurdalen, 14km from Geilo, with magnificent views of Hardangervidda. There are eight luxury suites, a bar with live music, and traditional Norwegian food is served.
