Ay, there’s the rub. Where to stay if you’re skiing Hochzillertal-Hochfugen?

For off-pisters, looking for a short-break freeride destination, then the small cluster of hotels at the bottom of Hochfugen is worth serious consideration. There’s no nightlife here – but there is good food. And if you’ve got a car, and don’t mind day-tripping up and down the Zillertal, you can turn a weekend into a whole week packed with skiing.

However, if you’re in the market for a conventional week-long holiday, based in a buzzing ski town, skiing mainly on-piste, then you’ll be better off in Mayrhofen

The Sporthotel Lamark is the place to stay in Hochfugen

If all you want to do is ski hard during the day, eat well at dinner and then sink into an exhausted fug over a glass of whisky, then the Sporthotel Lamark is for you. Not only have some of its rooms had a recent and luxurious makeover. But it’s also the home of one of Austria’s best restaurants, the Alexander. Alexander Frankhauser is the chef and has 18/20 Gault Millau points for his cooking. In 2005, he was also named Austria’s Chef of the Year.

Prices are roughly what you’d expect from a central three-star hotel in Meribel.

Moving down a notch, the three-star Berghotel Hochfugen is right next to the lifts and has a big pool. But if it’s cheap digs your after, the best option is to book on the apartments in the Appart-Montana building. That way you can cook for yourself some evenings and have maybe one blowout meal at the Alexander Restaurant in the Sporthotel Lamark.

You can also stay on the slopes in the Hochzillertal

Sleeping in style up on the mountain is now the cool thing to do in the Hochzillertal. It started with at Kristalhütte – which has played host to  Presidents of both Austria and Germany in recent years. And now the new Wendelhütte is offering even more luxurious accommodation. Both are a big hit with their core audience – Austrians and Bavarians on ski weekends.

Of course, the proximity of Innbruck airport means that skiers from further afield can target them too. Though off-pisters will still be better off in Hochfugen, close to the bottom of the lifts.
