La Plagne’s Lift Revolution Continues: Roche de Mio Gondola Phase Two Underway
La Plagne is on a roll. Following the successful opening of the Glaciers gondola lift in December 2023, which now whisks skiers from Roche de Mio up to the stunning Live 3000 plateau, the resort is moving full steam ahead with the next phase of its ambitious lift modernisation programme.
The High-Flying Glaciers Gondola: A Game-Changer
The Glaciers gondola has already transformed skier access to La Plagne’s upper reaches. Linking Roche de Mio directly to Live 3000 at a lofty 3080m, this sleek new gondola offers faster, smoother and more comfortable rides into the high alpine. But it’s not just about efficiency. The journey is a spectacle in itself, with panoramic views of the Northern Alps, Mont Blanc and La Grande Casse that’ll leave even seasoned skiers reaching for their cameras.
For the brave and curious, Aérolive ups the ante. This unique open-air cabin experience immerses you fully in the alpine environment, offering an unfiltered blast of fresh mountain air and a full 360-degree view. It’s part thrill ride, part sightseeing tour and entirely unforgettable.
Phase Two: The New Roche de Mio Gondola
Now, attention turns to the second phase. Construction of the brand-new Roche de Mio gondola is underway and scheduled for completion by December 2025. This modern link will connect Plagne Bellecôte to Roche de Mio via the Col de Forcle, significantly improving skier mobility across the area.
During the summer 2025 construction period, skiers and hikers should note that the existing gondola between Plagne Bellecôte and Belle Plagne will be offline. In its place, a handy shuttle service will run between the two villages, ensuring continued access to the Roche de Mio via Belle Plagne.
What This Means for Next Winter
Once operational, the new Roche de Mio gondola will deliver an even more seamless skiing experience:
-
Direct access from Plagne Bellecôte to Roche de Mio via the new lift.
-
Connections from Champagny via the Carella chairlift, offering even more flexibility for skiers based on the southern side.
-
Mid-station boarding at the Col de Forcle, allowing skiers to link up with the Grande Rochette sector with ease.
Why This Matters
La Plagne has always been a magnet for intermediate skiers thanks to its expansive blue pistes and family-friendly terrain. But with these new infrastructure upgrades, the resort is not only enhancing convenience but also future-proofing its lift system against the challenges of climate and sustainability.
By replacing older lifts in environmentally sensitive areas and anchoring new ones into stable rock, La Plagne is ensuring long-term access to its high-altitude terrain with minimal impact on the fragile permafrost.
For skiers eyeing La Plagne for winter 2025-26, these updates promise shorter lift queues, quicker transitions and even more piste mileage to explore. In short, more time skiing and less time queuing. And isn’t that what we all want?
