Where To Ski

There are over 100 resorts open worldwide and over the weekend Sun Peaks in British Columbia, Canada became the World Leader for open terrain (13/13 lifts; 105/135km piste; 60-75cm base).

THE ALPS

Solden is back in pole position in Austria for the most terrain on offer (24/31 lifts; 72/143km piste; 5-45cm base) with Axamer Lizum, Bodele, Gargellen, Gurgl, Hintertux, Kaunertal, Kitzski, Kitzsteinhorn, Moelltal Glacier, Obertauern, Pitztal Glacier, Schladming, Silvreta Montafon, and Stubai rounding out the list of the 15 resorts offering rapidly improving skiing.

Italy has six ski areas open. The glacier at Val Senales; Solda in the South Tyrol; Cervinia, which is linked to the slopes of Zermatt in Switzerland; 3 Zinnen Dolomites and Cortina; and Madonna di Campiglio which is open on Saturdays and Sundays for now.

Saas-Fee has the most terrain available in Switzerland (11/23 lifts; 34/100km piste; 40-155cm base), and is joined by Arosa, Adelboden, Corvatsch, Davos-Klosters, Diavolezza, Engelberg, Flumserberg, Glacier 3000 – Les Diablerets,  Murren, Stoos, Verbier, and Zermatt.

France has joined the party with Tignes and Val Thorens opening this past weekend.

THE NORDIC COUNTRIES

Thanks to snow farming practices and early season cold temperatures suitable for snow making Finland’s Levi, Pyha, Saariselka and Ruka, and Sweden’s Kabdalis and Tarnaby are open for the season offering good but limited skiing.

Norway’s Galdhopiggen Summer Skiing area is holding on well in to the Autumn after recent snowfall with all lifts and terrain open and a 1m base up high. It’s been joined by Oppdal which opened this past weekend.

NORTH AMERICA

CANADA

Alberta currently has four resorts open for daily operations (Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise, Marmot Basin, and Mt Norquay) with Nakiska open on weekends.

All five resorts have a combination of natural and artificial snow covering the open slopes.

British Columbia is open for business with Big White, Silver Star and Sun Peaks joining Whistler Blackcomb which opened last Thursday.

Sommet Saint-Sauveur in Quebec is open thanks to extensive artificial snow making.

USA

The US leads the ski world with 41 resorts open for Winter fun after great early season snowfall and low temperatures allowing artificial snow making at ski areas on the West Coast and across the Rockies from Idaho down to Arizona.

Mikaela Schiffrin recorded her 99th career win finishing first in the Women’s Slalom at Gurgl, Austria

She now moves on to home soil hoping to notch up her 100th career win at Killington, Vermont this coming weekend.

World Snow Forecast For the Next 3-4 Days

After last week’s storm system the Alps will see mostly sunny skies and cold temperatures over the next 3-4 days.

There’s 5-10cm forecast in Austria (Gurgl); France (Tignes); Italy (Solda and Val Senales); and Switzerland (Saas Fee, Verbier, Zermatt).

It’s a similar situation across Finland (Levi, Ruka), Norway (Oppdal), and Sweden (Kabdalis) with 5-15cm forecast.

The Alberta resorts of Canada (Lake Louise, Sunshine) will see a sprinkling of new snowfall and cold temperatures.

Most of the US resorts will see continued low temperatures and sunshine for the first half of the week.

Colorado resorts (Steamboat, Vail) are expecting between 20-30cm, with California (Heavenly, Mammoth, Palisades Tahoe) forecast to receive 60-100cm of new snowfall.
