Where To Ski
There are over 100 resorts open worldwide with Sun Peaks in British Columbia, Canada remaining the World Leader for open terrain (13/13 lifts; 102/135km piste; 60-75cm base).
THE ALPS
Solden is still in pole position in Austria for the most terrain on offer (23/31 lifts; 73/143km piste; 5-120cm base) with Axamer Lizum, Bodele, Gargellen, Gerlitzen, Gurgl, Hintertux, Kaunertal, Kitzski, Kitzsteinhorn, Moelltal Glacier, Obertauern, Pitztal Glacier, Schladming, Silvreta Montafon, and Stubai rounding out the list of the 16 resorts offering rapidly improving skiing.
Italy has six ski areas open. The glacier at Val Senales; Solda in the South Tyrol; Cervinia, which is linked to the slopes of Zermatt in Switzerland; 3 Zinnen Dolomites and Cortina; and Madonna di Campiglio which is open on Saturdays and Sundays for now.
Zermatt has the most terrain available in Switzerland (18/51 lifts; 65/322km piste; 20-170cm base), and is joined by Arosa, Adelboden, Andermatt, Corvatsch, Davos-Klosters, Diavolezza, Engelberg, Flumserberg, Glacier 3000 – Les Diablerets, Murren, Saas Fee, Stoos, and Verbier.
France has two resorts open, Tignes and Val Thorens, with more scheduled to open this coming weekend.
Germany has 15 resorts open with only Buron-Wertach offering more than 4km of pisted terrain.
THE NORDIC COUNTRIES
Thanks to snow farming practices and early season cold temperatures suitable for snow making Finland’s Levi, Pyha, Ruka, Saariselka and Yllas, and Sweden’s Kabdalis and Tarnaby are open for the season offering good but limited skiing.
Norway’s Galdhopiggen Summer Skiing area is open for one more week and has been joined by Bjorli, Geilo, Kvitfjell and Oppdal.
NORTH AMERICA
CANADA
Alberta currently has four resorts open for daily operations (Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise, Marmot Basin, and Mt Norquay) with Nakiska open on weekends.
All five resorts have a combination of natural and artificial snow covering the open slopes, with Banff Sunshine offering 44km of pisted terrain.
Cypress Mountain and Grouse Mountain outside of Vancouver have joined Big White, Silver Star, Sun Peaks and Whistler Blackcomb giving British Columbia 6 resorts open for the season.
Sommet Saint-Sauveur in Quebec is open thanks to extensive artificial snow making.
USA
The US leads the ski world with 42 resorts open for Winter fun after great early season snowfall and low temperatures allowing artificial snow making at ski areas on the West Coast and across the Rockies from Idaho down to Arizona.

ASIA
Japan
Shigakogen on the main island of Honshu became the first Japanese resort to open for Winter operations. Just one slope and two lifts at the moment but there’s a consistent cycle of ‘JaPOW’ storms on the near horizon.

World Snow Forecast For the Next 3-4 Days
After 5-10cm of snowfall today, the Alps will see mostly sunny skies and freeze thaw conditions as the freezing level fluctuates between 2000m and 3,000m over the next 3-4 days.
The Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish resorts will see a storm system move in over the weekend bringing 10-15cm of new snow.
The Alberta resorts of Canada will see cloudy skies and cold temperatures with a chance of light snowfall.
Most of the US resorts will see continued low temperatures and sunshine for the second half of the week.
The old adage of ‘schedule a race and the snow will come’ will see cold temperatures and 5-15cm of new snow for the Eastern US resorts including Killington, Vermont which has had the green light to host the next round of World Cup races this coming weekend.
Shigakogen, Japan will see 5-10cm of new snow today followed by clear skies through next week.
The Tohoku resorts of Northern Honshu will see a big storm system moving in from today with 75-90cm forecast which will hopefully result in more Japanese ski resorts opening soon.
