In Gstaad, a whopping 14 restaurants boast more than a dozen GaultMillau points between them. Topping the list is Robert Speth’s Chesery, built in 1962 by the Aga Khan and serving French cuisine. Basta By Dalsass has a chef from the South Tyrol in Italy to conjure up Mediterranean-style dishes. La Bagatelle in Hotel Grand Chalet is a resort highlight that specialises in French and regional dishes. Gstaad Palace has three restaurants all with faultless service – formal attire is required in all of them. Dinner in Hotel Olden is a must, with its formal wood-panelled dining room upstairs. Downstairs is more casual with a piano-playing singer performing in the later evenings. Erich Baumer’s Sonnenhof in Saanen has great food and a warm ambience. Simpler offerings include Hüsy in Blankenburg, which specialises in fresh fish.

The best lunch spots

Head for the rustic Chemi-Stube (+41 33 722 22 40) above St Stephan for home-made soups and typical Bratwurst and Rosti, Berghaus Wasserngrat is at Wasserngrat. Rinderberg-Spitz (+41 33 722 16 94) is inside the cable-car station up at 2000m above Zweisimmen. It has a good sun terrace and you can also stay the night in one of its three simple bedrooms. Saanerslochgrat (+41 33 748 96 42) restaurant is in the heart of the Schonried–Saanenmoser–Zweisimmen–St Stephan ski area. Berghaus Rellerli (+41 33 748 87 22) is a cosy table-service restaurant above Schonried. It is popular for weddings, being one of the few remaining branches of the Bernese Oberland Register Office, in which civil marriages can be solemnised.
