Star of the town is Les Servages d’Armelle, the restaurant inside the resort’s smartest hotel. Le Bistot Grill du Gron (+33 450 18 62 12) is possibly unique in the Alps. Host and chef, Phillipe, parades tempting cuts of meat before you then cooks them front of the restaurant on a huge open fire. The cote du boeuf is said to be: “second to none – and so it should be for 40 euros!”
La Fringale (+33 450 90 03 17) is the sort of place that every resort needs: a simple inexpensive fast food place selling burgers, pizza, sandwiches and daily specials. Le Neve (+33 450 96 53 56) is a family-run restaurant that’s been in Les Carroz for quite some time and has built up a great reputation. Many of the signature dishes have been passed down through the generations. Go off-season and pre-order the beignets – delicious potato pancakes. It’s also good for general Savoyard fare: “Do you know anywhere else that offers starter-sizes fondues?” said a reporter.
Last, but certainly not least, there’s La Vache Qui Ride for teepee fondue nights. Owner, Martial, picks you up from your chalet or apartment and drives you to a secluded spot where you don snow shoes and off you hike. The evening is highly recommended: “The tucker is top notch,” was one favourable report.
The mountain restaurants
L’Igloo (+33 450 90 14 31), at the top of the Morillon chair, is warmly praised as a lunch spot, though it’s not cheap. Reporters recommended the large enclosed picnic area at the top of the telecabine…should you wish to take your own lunch and avoid the rather pricey restaurant. Les Servages d’Armelle, at the foot of Les Carroz slopes, is said to be incredible but pricey, according to one reporter. It has has a warm and woody interior complete with sizzling log fire. Les Molliets (+33 682 09 50 03), also at the base of the slopes, is worth a mention. Make sure you ask whether the merguez sausages and couscous are on since they are “literally one of the best things I have ever eaten on a mountain,” according to one reporter.
