Les Carroz has a low-key, family-orientated atmosphere, so it’s not the place to come if you want a buzzing nightlife. The traditional village has received recent investment which means it is expanding but, even so, this is still the place to come to learn to ski or to bring your family. If you’re looking for a party atmosphere, you won’t find it in neighbouring Flaine either. That said, the Marlow (+33 450 90 05 67), on the main place d’Ambience in Les Carroz, gets the late sunshine and serves huge cocktails. At around 9pm La Pointe Noire (+33 450 90 04 97), next door, starts to get busy with video, pool, and occasional live bands.

If you are around after midnight it time to head for Carpe Diem (+33 450 90 34 59) for cocktails and karaoke before rocking up at Club 74 (+33 450 90 04 69) which is a typically French nightclub with lasers, cages and – bizarrely – a fish tank.
La Vache Qui Ride is a fun place to spend the evening. You are picked up from your accommodation by owner, Martial, who then guides you on snowshoes to a teepee up the mountain. “When you arrive at the teepee Martial makes a fantastic fondue and the party begins,” said a reporter.
