After very welcome snowfall across much of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland this past week we’ll see the freezing level climb to 3,000m by Thursday morning bringing above-freezing temperatures and freeze thaw conditions.
It will be a similar weather pattern in the Pyrenees, Andorra and southern Spain with the freezing level climbing to 3,500m and the mercury climbing to +8C by Thursday.
The cold weather continues in Finland with temperatures between -20 to -25C and a light dusting of snow through Thursday.
Both Norway and Sweden can expect temperatures between -10C to -20C through Thursday, with 10-20cm forecast.
The freezing level will be much lower in Central and Eastern Europe topping out at 1,500m. This will bring freeze thaw conditions down low but great conditions up high with the chance of 5-10cm of new snow. Poiana Brasov, Romania is forecast to receive 34cm up high.
There’ll be a mix of rain and snow at the Scottish resorts in the earlier part of the week with Glencoe forecast to receive 20-25cm up high.
Further east, the Georgian and Turkish resorts will remain cold and sunny with a new storm system bringing 10-15cm of new snowfall heading in Wednesday evening.

On Japan’s main island of Honshu the mercury will be rising above zero bringing freeze thaw conditions top to bottom.
News From Around the Ski World
Whenever Japan is mentioned in skiing circles the first things that spring to mind are the quality and quantity of the powder snow, the mythical ‘JaPOW!’
What’s often overlooked and which separates it from other heavy snowfall areas of the ski world is consistency.
Consistency of snowfall combined with consistent below freezing temperatures for much of the winter, especially on the northern island of Hokkaido.
From the start of December through to the end of January, Hokkaido enjoys almost daily snowfall of between 5-15cm. Sometimes as much as 40cm overnight.
And it doesn’t stop there. February and March typically see 3-4 snow events per week.
With some of the best powder skiing and snowboarding in the world, it’s also the perfect place to learn to ski and to rip around on-piste.
With such regular snowfall, the piste bashers have the best snow with which to groom the pistes to perfection.
On a global level, we want to give a shoutout to all the ski patrollers out there, working to make mountain and sport safe. On Saturday, we celebrated International Ski Patrol Day. Read Amy Marwick’s post over on our sister site, Fall Line, as she uncovers The Best Kept Secrets of Ski Patrol.
