What Lies Beneath? | Snow Report

Could This Be the First Significant Snow Storm of the Year?

The freezing level in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland will hover around 1,500m through to next Monday with rain below that level and significant snowfall above it.

It’s a similar story in France, Italy and Switzerland with 20-40cm forecast. St Moritz, Switzerland could see up to 55cm of new snow and Sella Nevea in Eastern Italy a whopping 1m of fresh snow.

News From Around the Ski World

With over a month until the Easter holidays, the snow storm rolling through Europe from today could be the most significant of the season.

Many resorts, especially those with slopes below 1,500m, are in desperate need of cooler temperatures and snowfall to maintain the skiing links to the base areas and villages.

If these are lost due to warmer temperatures and/or rain then downloading from higher slopes at the end of the day could become a long drawn out affair.

There is significant snowfall forecast across the Alps in the coming ten days, but with this new snow comes a number of challenges.

Off-piste the new snow may have difficulty bonding to the harder snow beneath it causing the avalanche risk to rise.

Plus obstacles which have reappeared due to snow melt will be covered but not buried.

It may be prudent to get the local knowledge and recent experiences of an instructor or guide if you’re thinking of venturing beyond the piste.

If you’re out in resort drop us a line via our social media channels to share your ‘on the snow’ experiences and photos.

We’ll be posting twice-weekly snow reports on Mondays and Thursdays throughout the 2023/24 winter season, so bookmark us or better yet subscribe to get the latest snow news and our tips for where the snow will be.
