News From Around the Ski World
February finished strongly across the snow world especially in Utah, USA and March has come in ‘like a lion’ bringing heavy snowfall to the western USA and Canada, Norway, the Alps and Japan.
California resorts have received almost 2m of snow over the weekend.
It was Utah’s snowiest February on record with over 2.5m (100″) of ‘The Greatest Snow on Earth’ falling across the state.
In some areas like Whistler Blackcomb, BC, Canada it was a very welcome change from the rain which has plagued the resort for much of the season.
For the Norwegian resorts of Gaustablikk, Myrkdalen and Stranda it was business as usual in what has been a season to remember.
It’s been low tide in Japan with significantly less snowfall than usual, but there have been a series of storms which have reminded locals and amazed visitors as to how good it can be when the snow machine is operating normally.
And after a strong start in the Alps followed by a fallow six weeks in most places, the end of February into the start of March has seen unbeatable conditions especially in the Aosta Valley in northwestern Italy, which has seen over a metre in the past couple of days.
Editor Nicola has been in Val d’Isère, which caught the front that’s been sweeping in from Italy. After 36hrs of stormy conditions from the village up – during which over 50+cm was reported to have fallen at valley level (with up to 1 metre reported on the Pisaillas glacier) – skies cleared on Monday 4 March.
“There was easy-to-find, hip-deep powder as far as the eye could see,” reported Nicola.
“Ski days don’t get much better!”
With the Easter holidays looming at the end of the month and base depths healthy many will be hoping March goes ‘out like a lamb’ bringing clear skies and sunshine under which they can enjoy alfresco dining and après ski.
