Both Grandvalira Soldeu and El Tarter have a good selection of restaurants to choose from, with both international dishes and the local Catalan cuisine.

Hort de Popaire (+376 851 211) in Soldeu is renowed for its grilled lamb and steaks. La Fontanella (+376 871 787), in Hotel Piolets, serves pasta and pizza. Fat Albert’s (+376 851 765) – known as Fatty’s – is rated for its great pizzas and heavenly rosemary bread, as is Sol i Neu (+376 851 325) (“the more formal restaurant upstairs was outstanding, with great service and really interesting food”). British favourites including full breakfasts, burgers, and sandwiches to name just a few. Slim Jims (+376 852567) has nightly specials such as home-made Thai curry. La Llar del Artesa (+376 851 078), just out of town at Bordes d’Envalira, has good-value Catalan mountain dishes. Borda de l’Horto (+376 851 622), outside El Tarter, serves grilled meat and fish and is popular with the locals. A reporter recommended The Curry House (“pretty good value”) where the menu includes all you can eat and drink.

Eating on the mountain

Roc de les Bruixes (+376 890 696), above Canillo, is warmly recommended, along with refurbished Solanelles (+376 759 008) in the Encamp sector. Hotel Bruxelles is recommended at lunchtime for its great pizzas and fast service. Gall de Bosc (+376 890 607), above Soldeu, has Catalan mountain cuisine and spectacular views thanks to the large glass façade. Try faves a la catalana (broad beans fried in olive oil with garlic, mushrooms and ham) or trixat (bubble-and-squeak topped with slivers of black pudding). XiriPizza La Solana, as its name suggests, only serve pizza. Highlight is Llac Pessons (+376 759 015) at remote Grau Roig in the ski area, looking out across the frozen lake. It offers a dozen dishes that change daily, with an emphasis on heart-warming soups and grilled meat.
