It’s been a great week in the Mountain States of the USA with skiers and snowboarders enjoying deep, dry powder conditions on a rapidly improving base.
But sometimes Mother Nature gets too excited and drops snow faster than the mountain operations and snow patrol teams can clear it in order to make the ski area safe.
In the Little Cottonwood Canyon resorts of Alta and Snowbird, Utah, USA this is known as ‘Interlodge’.
An Interlodge event is when snow levels are so great and avalanche danger is so extreme that patrons and employees of Alta and Snowbird are confined to resort buildings while avalanche work is undertaken.
Road access is shut down as well while avalanche work is performed.
An Interlodge situation, while a rare occurrence, is performed in the interest of everyone’s safety with travel outside of the buildings illegal.
Most Interlodge events last only a few hours and are pre-planned, controlled situations between Alta, Snowbird and Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT).
Depending on snow conditions, an Interlodge event can last anywhere from an hour to an overnight stay and once lifted you’ll likely enjoy some of the best snow of your life.
If you’re truly lucky, you get to reap the benefits of the fabled ‘Country Club Day’ when lifts are able to turn safely for those already at the resorts while the roads below are closed for everyone else.
Have any readers been lucky enough to be a ‘Country Club’ member?
