March Warms Up | Snow Report

Snow Forecast for the Next 3-4- Days

The freezing level will rise to 2,650m across much of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland by Thursday bringing rainfall at village level today but snow above 2,100m. St Anton, Austria can expect 15-20cm to go with the 10cm that fell overnight.

It’s a similar story in the French and Spanish Pyrenees and Andorra with the freezing level rising to 3,100m. Expect light rainfall top to bottom.

The cold weather continues in Finland, Norway and Sweden with temperatures between 0C and -10C with sunshine and light snow showers forecast through Thursday.

Much of Central and Eastern Europe will see a mix of temperatures through Thursday bringing freeze thaw conditions, light rainfall below 2,000m, and 5-10cm above that level on Tuesday.

Further east, the Georgian and Turkish resorts will remain cold with a mix of sun and snow showers through Thursday bringing 15-20cm of new snow to Gudauri, Georgia and Ejder 3200, Turkey.

The Scottish resorts will see warmer temperatures and freeze thaw conditions with heavy rain down low on Tuesday.

The East Coast of the US will remain cold with see 5-10cm of new snowfall up high and light rain at village level through Thursday. Smuggler’s Notch and Stowe, Vermont are forecast to receive 20-25cm of new snow.

The Mountain States of the USA will see a combination of freeze thaw conditions and light snowfall up high. The Western US states of California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska will see freeze thaw conditions through Thursday with sunshine and temperatures rising close to +10 C.

Eastern Canada saw the mercury drop yesterday bringing 10-20cm of new snow. It will stay below freezing through Thursday with light snowfall.

The mountain provinces of Alberta and BC will see a combination of freeze thaw conditions and light snowfall up high. Lake Louise and Sunshine, Alberta are forecast to receive 15-20cm of new snow.

Whistler Blackcomb will see sunshine and temperatures soaring to +15C at village level before a cold snap on Wednesday bringing a 4-5 day storm cycle and 25-35cm in the alpine.

The northern Japanese island of Hokkaido remains cold with accumulations of up to 40cm forecast for the Niseko area and Kiroro through Thursday.

After moderate snowfalls of 10-15cm today, Honshu will see a major storm system rolling through from Wednesday bringing 80cm to Shiga Kogen and over a metre to Happo One in the Hakuba Valley.

News From Around the Ski World 

For his 87th birthday legendary ski acrobat Art Furrer dusted off his skis and took to the slopes of the Aletsch Arena in Switzerland. But these were no ordinary skis he took out of storage…

No, these were the custom made 4m long skis he first skied in 1983 when he and entertainer Kurt Felix filmed the production ‘As You Like Fun?’ In the skit, Art played an American with a Stetson hat who goes to a private teacher at the ski school with skis which are far too long. After just a few minutes, Art was lying in the snow, got tangled up with his skis; and later skied into a stream.

Mike Richards

Welsh valleys boy born & bred, Mike now lives between Cardiff and Niseko in Hokkaido, Japan where he's a pro ski instructor. Mike came to skiing later in life at 27, with his first ski season spent as a Chalet Host in Ellmau, Austria in 1993. He's skied every year since, notching up 100+ ski areas across 21 countries and five continents, including his home hill in Brecon Beacons National Park.
