Schladming has an abundance of friendly huts – over 40 of them – scattered across the mountainside. Seiterhutte is a traditional wooden chalet with a glass and aluminium extension. It serves hearty Styrian cusine and daily homemade cakes and pastries. Märchenwiese Hutte (+43 03687 61251), near the lift of the same name, has reliable home cooking. Onkel Willy’s Hutte is set on three levels: the Bauernstuberl bar with an open fireplace, Zirben and
Steirerstuberl gallery with carvings handmade by Uncle Willy himself, and the
Salettlbar with its panoramic views and a pleasant sun terrace. Amongst their specialities are roast pork, roast lamb, and a large selection of freshly prepared salads. Eiskarhutte, at Reiteralm, is recommended.

Dining in Schladming

L’Osteria da Giorgio (+43 03687 23173, and Va Bene (+43 03687 23266) provide an Italian alternative to Austrian mountain fare, along with Giovanni’s Pizza & Pasta (+43 03687 22486). The Royer Grill, in Sporthotel Royer, is highly recommended. Head chef Horst Plut and his team combine traditional Austrian cuisine with tasty aromas from around the world. Kirchenwirt has good-quality food, a warm atmosphere and excellent service. Maria’s Mexican rings the changes, as does the Caribbean Papa Joe’s. The restaurant in Aparthotel Ferienalm has a good reputation. For a fun evening out you can take toboggans up to the Eiskarhutte, at Reiteralm. From there you can take a 7km-long, groomed natural toboggan run down after dinner – until midnight.
