Valloire is hardly a clubbing Mecca – for that you’d be better off staying somewhere like Val Thorens or Les Deux Alpes. But there’s a tangible sense of ‘nice-place-to-be’ among the throng of visitors and locals alike, and it’s a sentiment we share. There are some good places to hang out, too, once you find them.

In fact, away from the hill, Valloire will has plenty to offer teenagers and 20-somethings, including a cinema, ice rink, disco and the popular Mast’Rock Cafe (+33 479 05 34 52) which has a season-long programme of live music events. The cafe is tucked discretely away beside the skating-rink, and cranks up rather later in the evening. Inside lies a no-frills bar, with great music playing. We found staff friendly, drink prices refreshingly reasonable and there’s free WiFi access, too.

L’Equipe (+33 479 59 00 57) is a popular bar/restaurant on the corner of Le Christiania Hotel and close to the Cret de la Brive gondola and ESF ski school office. After the lifts have closed this is where the ski instructors and their adult pupils head, to unwind and compare the day’s experiences. There’s a great atmosphere, and you get the distinct feeling that you’ve stumbled upon the Jean-Baptiste Grange fan club.

Activity-wise, the non-ski possibilities locally include ice-skating, dog-sledding, llama treks and an adventure park featuring walkways among the trees.
