The Salzburger Sportwelt region has lots of undulating terrain, ideal for first-timers and improvers. Flachau has family runs and nursery slopes. There are also beginner slopes at the mid-station in Flachau and the base of the Flying Mozart gondola in Wagrain, with plenty of wide easy slopes nearby. Despite being small, the Monte Popolo ski area in Eben im Pongau has lots of family facilities including a designated children’s area.

Each of the resorts has at least one ski school. Rot Weiss Rot Austrian Skischool has branches in both Alpendorf and Wagrain. Wagrain also has Skischule Wagrain. Flachau has eight schools, including Hermann Maier and Sport am Jet. St Johann has three including Skischool Alpendorf/Snowboardschool Vitamin B.

In Radstadt-Altenmarkt there’s a choice of five schools, including Skischool Happy-Maier and the Green Orange. Ski and Snowboard School Eben (+43 0664 6390209) is in the village of the same name. Filzmoos has three schools: Bögei, Exklusiv, and the Filzmoos.

Children’s facilities

For children there’s Wagrain Guest Kindergarten, which cares for little ones from three years of age. Flachau Miniclub (+43 06457 2090) is for children from 12 months old, Altenmarkt’s Balla Kindergarten cares for children from three years of age, and Radstadt’s Viking Childrens’ Olympics (+43 06454 8400).

In Alpendorf Wellness & Sporthotel Alpina is a member of the Kinder Hotels, which are run with families in mind. Stork’s Nest is the creche for babies from four weeks of age, which is fully equipped with cots, bottle warmers, baby monitors, high chairs and buggies. The hotel also has a supervised activity programme for its three- to 12 year-old guests. There’s an in-house spa for parents. Another family specialist hotel is the four-star Seitenalm Familienhotel in Radstadt. It houses a large indoor play area, a kids’ cinema and chill-out room for teenagers, and what it describes as a ‘baby lounge for the time with your baby’.
On top of this is a wellness area with indoor swimming-pool and a separate paddling pool with a water slide. The hotel has an exclusive magic carpet and drag-lift right behind the building, and the ski school meeting place is also behind the hotel.

Flachau and Filzmoos best for families

Flachau can be singled out as an especially child-friendly destination. The village is pretty with beautifully maintained buildings in a magical setting. Everything is within easy walking distance, and the ski schools accept children from four years old. Bobo Miniclub Flachau is the non-ski kindergarten here. There are lots of activities both on and off the slopes, including horse riding, sleigh rides, ice-skating and swimming. Filzmoos is another family-friendly destination, which is arguably one of the area’s most attractive villages. It has its own slopes and a small, separate ski area of around 35km. Filzmoos Skischool offers childcare, and all three ski schools offer tuition.
