In the Salzburger Sportwelt area you will find a good choice of bed and breakfasts, inns and hotels – many of them dedicated to families. St Johann-Alpendorf has the Wellness & Sporthotel Alpina, which contains apartments, a playroom, and an impressive indoor swimming-pool.

Altenmarkt has the lovely Hotel Schartner, set out in three separate buildings linked by pathways, giving it the appearance of a tiny hamlet. At the centre of the complex is an Alpine hut, where up to 50 people can gather for anything from a quiet drink to a full-on party. Weekly entertainment evenings feature traditional fiddle and accordion music. Also in the resort is Hotel Alpenrose, which has a wellness and fitness centre, and a restaurant serving ‘creative cuisine’.

In Flachau there is Vierjahreszeiten, which is located in a central but quiet location. Hotel Tauernhof calls itself ‘a four-star base camp for sporty guests’. Flachauerhof is a comfortable and traditional establishment in the village centre. Three-star Hotel Wieseneck (+43 6457 2276) is in a peaceful, ski-in ski-out position.

Wagrainerhof, in Wagrain, has good half-board food and welcomes children. The shuttle-bus stops right in front of the hotel, which is 300m from the lifts and the ski school. Three-star Hotel Sonne is a pleasant establishment with a sauna, gym and a sun terrace. Hotel Edelweiss has a relaxed atmosphere and prides itself on being eco-friendly – the restaurant uses local organic produce and its Green Spa utilises all natural materials and ingredients. It’s family-orientated, too, with children enjoying a separate swimming-pool and sauna. Hotel Alpina has a large swimming-pool and spa.

Family favourites

Two hotels in particular stand out as being excellent for families. In Alpendorf Wellness & Sporthotel Alpina is a member of the Kinder Hotels, which are run with families in mind. Stork’s Nest is its creche for babies from four weeks of age, which is fully equipped with cots, bottle warmers, baby monitors, high chairs and buggies. The hotel also has a supervised activity programme for its three- to 12 year-old guests. There’s an in-house spa for parents, too. Another family specialist hotel is the four-star Seitenalm Familienhotel in Radstadt. It houses a large indoor play area, a kids’ cinema and chill-out room for teenagers, and what it describes as a ‘baby lounge for the time with your baby’.
On top of this is a wellness area with indoor swimming-pool and a separate paddling pool with a water slide. The hotel has an exclusive magic carpet and drag-lift for its small guests – located right behind the building – and the ski school meeting place is also behind the hotel.
